male beagle/no leg lift

Question:

When ever my male 24 month old beagle urinates he just squats. help.

Response:

I have 6 male dogs (greyhounds, whippets, saluki) — they rarely lift their leg and prefer to squat.  I see no problem with this.  They prefer to go in the middle of the yard rather than peeing on my plants, which is fine with me! Don’t worry that it’s a medical problem, because it’s not.  Some dogs just prefer to squat. — Lori in Peoria, IL with the Sighthound Six-Pack

I’m sorry but I have to disagree that it’s not possible to be a medical problem. We adopted a beagle stray a few months ago & he wouldn’t lift his leg. Beagles are prone to back problems, which we didn’t know before, but yesterday he woke up completely paralyzed on his back legs. He’s still in the hospital receiving steroid treatment because he blew a disk & his spine is luxated. They’re trying the steroids to reduce the resulting inflammation enough to enable him to urinate & defacate on his own. If he can defacate they can show me how to express his bladder. He’s not going to regain use of his legs but if he can at least poop we can get him a card. I’m sitting here sobbing & praying that this will work. It came on so suddenly I still can’t believe it. Anyway, we now know that he didn’t lift his leg because his back hurt.
