He’s not scratching AS much, but now it seems his ears are bothering him more so of course now I’m wondering if he has ear mites.  This is all really frustrating because I’ve been out of work right now, and I simply don’t have the money to take him to the vet, which appears to be what I’m going to have to do.  I don’t know, I’m just really frustrated right now with it all. Well, I didn’t know that.  Like I said when I thought of a dog with the mange, hair is falling out all over.  Maybe this is what is going on with my dog, but how do they get the mange?  I have no idea whats wrong with him. I’d hped the shampoo would help, and I think it has a bit, but now his ears are bothering him more.  I feel so bad for him, cuz I’m pretty much helpless right now. B-Worthey

If your dog’s old enough cortisone/predisone is a short term option. Excessive thirst/hunger are side effects of steroid use, but short term use will control, not cure, the itching. The beagle we had before our current dog had horrible skin/itching problem with significant hair loss as a puppy. They treated her for sarcoptic mites(see below). The vet said almost all puppies come in contact with this condition but as a result her slow developing immune system she developed this condition when young and was fine after it (immune system) finally fully developed. http://www.vetinfo.com/dsmange.html

As mentioned above in the thread, allergy is often the initial cause. Change in dog food is often a culprit, especially, unusual food ( like running out of the regular stock and buying an alternative…) Summer effect: make sure the food is fresh ( industrial food), it can go wrong through too long exposure to high humidity. Activity in the garden ( during summer), use of "odd chemicals" in garden maintenance…etc As the previous message did said, initial allergy can lead to secondary infections (impetigo)…etc Watch out in using other chemicals ( shampoo, powders,..etc) to cure scratching,…can lead to more scratching!!! We found a Quarter patch where the hair had fallen out that prompted us to take her to the Vet. Her skin was red all over from scratching but no other hair loss or open lesions. She’s doing well after 2 of 3 treatments. She was first treated with antibiotics for a Staph infection.

I thought with the mange though his hair would be just falling out.  I know thats what I’ve seen with dogs and people say he has the mange.  My dog is not doing that, well, I think he has scracthed/chewed some places raw, but I never would have thought mange, no other hair is falling out. Thanks for the info.  I have a medicated shampoo that I picked up at a pet store that says its for some skin conditions and to help with scratching. It has sulphur, salicylic acid and something else as active ingredients. Any thoughts on these?  I’ve given him a bath, but he’s still scratching. I’m thinking it will need to be repeated as you said to truly have an effect.  Anyway, thanks for the info.  If things don’t get better, I suppose I’ll have to take him to the vet. B-Worthey

Response:

I can only speak from my personal experience. I have tried numerous shampoos and rinses, and some only seemed to make him worse.  These are the first two that I have had truly positive results with for my friend. As my new vet explained to me, a lot of itching starts with some allergy, and then the scratching leads to problems with bacteria and fungal infections. I mentioned that he was chewing his paws, and she felt that was a real sign of fungal infection. The Malaseb lists Miconazole Nitrate 2% and Chlorhexidine Gluconate 2% as the active ingredients.  The PearLyte has an oatmeal base and that also helps with the skin irritation. I am certain there are others in this group way more qualified than I am about commenting on ingredients in pet shampoos. Possibly you could do a Google search and get a lot of information. I hope your dog improves. I know what a helpless feeling you have when you see your friend suffer and you can’t seem to help. Bob
