Do Dogs Lose Baby Teeth?
Question:
>Do dogs lose their baby teeth and grow permanent teeth? > If so at what age?
I have a 4 month old boxer and he has begun losing his teeth. I have only found one, but I can see where he has lost about 4.

I remember finding my GSD’s baby teeth in the backyard when I was a kid (I had to have only been about 4). I was utterly CONVINCED that I had found dinosaur teeth and immediately ran in to show my mom.

Atty’s balls and toys were definitely bloody when she was losing her baby teeth. I don’t remember with Jadee. Since Atty is only 8 mo. old, it’s fresh in my mind still. She was about 4 mo. when it started. Sue and Atty

I had to reply to this because I was so lucky enough to have salvaged almost all of my guys baby teeth. He is now a healthy 80 pound Lab mix and it’s hard to believe that those teeny tiny little teeth used to big in that great big ole’ mouth. The vet said that he would start teething around 16 weeks and sure enough, he was right on the money. Up to that point, I was in his mouth looking around all the time just to get him used to me being there. When he started teething, I gave him cold things to help the pain, like frozen bagles and frozen grapes. Also, I would wet a washcloth pretty good and then roll it up tight like a cigar and freeze it and let him chew on those. He loved those the best. When the teeth started coming out, some of them got stuck in the washcloth or on some of his chew toys. Some of the molars would just be sitting on his gums where the new teeth were pushing them off and they would literally just fall off in my hand. One of his biggest molars, I wear in a locket all the time. It is one of my most prized possessions!!! If you check your pups mouth every day after teething starts, hopefully you’ll be lucky enough to get one of those little prizes!!

My puppy is now four and a half months old and hasn’t lost a single one of those razor sharp needles from his mouth. It’s been a lot of years since I had a puppy but my memory is that they come out 4 – 6 months old or so. This seems to coincide with them finally decreasing the amount of chewing they need to do so I can hardly wait! You should check in your dog’s mouth periodically to make sure that any baby teeth *are* coming out when the adult teeth come in. In some breeds – I have been warned specifically about this puppy because he has the black and silver schnauzer gene – the adult teeth can come in and not displace the puppy teeth without help. (Just wiggle them like a six-year-old kid does with his.) Judy

I asked when Molly was a pup and what I was told was anywhere from 3 to 7 months. The larger the breed the slower the maturity.

LOL! Yes they do and so many people don’t realize this when they get a new dog. You’ll be glad once all those little needles are replaced! : ) I remember the first time I got a puppy and he lost a tooth I thought something was wrong with him cause he lost like one right after the other. I don’t remember the age this happens though. Someone else will post it I’m sure. Good luck with your new pup. Debbie

yup, my little abby lost her baby teeth at a few months old. She has adult teeth now (she’s a 1 yo dalmatian) but she only has teeth at the front and back, there seems to be NO middle teeth. Is this normal?? Or is she still young enough to grow those middle teeth? Thanks, Jo

Yup, many owners keep them, but I never found any with Rocky and never though to look with Murphy. > If so at what age?
It’s been 3.5 years since I’ve had a puppy – it’s hard to remember. It seems to me that Rocky’s teeth were puppy-sharp for a couple of months after I got him – that would put it at about 4 months or so. — –Matt. Rocky’s a Dog.
