my snorting, coughing boxer

Question:

i have a boxer pup, six months old.  he’s in the last week or so begun to behave the way YOU might if you had some piece of food stuck at the back of your nose, and tried to sniff or snort as hard as you could to dislodge it and then, once you’d done so, coughed or hacked whatever it was up from the back of your throat. he’ll do this suddenly and without warning, and then he’ll stop.  there seems to be some logic or order to its occurance, but i haven’t figured this out yet. what might it be?  is it standard behavior for boxers?  my mom thinks so.  she says she had one when she was a child whom she remembers as occasionally having to do the same thing.  something about their noses, she says.  moms.  go figure. anyway.  after you, maybe the vet.  it doesn’t seem life threatening, but it IS disconcerting and looks damn uncomfortable. thanks. regards, rap

Response:

It might be Bordatello (spelling?) or Kennel cough.  You can vaccinate your have a disadvantaged respiratory system (i.e. there short snout) anyway, this probably won’t kill the dog, but it sure is not good.  Most vet’s will give the kennel cough vac. automatically, I would suggest getting annually from now on.   Dan
