Dachshund Types and behavioral characteristics
Question:
Hi, I own a smooth standard dachsund ; you can see pictures of her on http://www.learnfrenchinboston.com/pixel I grew up with a long hair, and my husband with a wire hair, so we are sort of doxie experts here !! I find wire hair to have the most carracter ; they are extremely stubburn and personnal, and can be hard to train cause they do not obey and follow their own mind. You should NEVER leave them outside without leash since they are the most hunter of the breed, and will follow their nose wherever it leads them. And believe me, although they are small, they do run fast
The smooth hair is a one person dog. He’ll be nice with the whole pack, and loving, but he really has one owner. They still have a mind of their own, but that’s why we love the breed, isn’t it ? Mine plays a kind of soccer by herself, and I feel so blissed to have a dog that doesn’t need me to entertain her all the time. Be careful, although the hair is short and very easy to take care of (I wash her everyweek, but don’t even brush her, all the petting she received is enough apparently !) but they DO shed. As for long hair, they are the most taim ; more loving and calm, less of a hunter temperament. But still a dachshund by all mean !! The coat needs to be brushed ; since their belly is so closed to the ground, they’ll get durty easely and will need to be washed quite often if you want a clean dog around. So take all that into consideration before choosing. It is not only a question of look. Of course, all this is my opinion, you’ll find lots of exeption to that, you can never make a rule ! Just consider those tendencies. As for breeder referal, go on the AKC site and see for youreself. I really don’t agree that it is difficult to find a good mini breeder, quite the contrary. Minis being so popular, lots of standard breeders turned into breeding minis, and they are beautiful and healthy. Do your homework, and you should be all set. of course, NEVER buy a dog from a store. I hope this helps, Camille

Are there any behavioral differences that distinguish smooth-haired, wire-haired, and long-haired dachshunds? Are these differences (if any exist) true both of standard and miniature versions?

Are you talking pet store stuff or from breeders or from GOOD breeders? Pet stores love the mini smooths. A friend of mine who is a Dachshund person has told me that it is very hard to find a good breeder of smooth mini’s…you can really stack those crates, you know?
FWIW wire-haireds are generally tougher dogs and very terrier like. Ann, Twzl, Sligo and Roy — Dog training is the last thing on my mind Mikey the non-dog trainer
