food allergies

Question:

A friend of mine has a male lab recently diagnosed with food alleriges. We are trying to come up with treats that we can make and/or buy that he can have.  The vet has said nothing with wheat, corn, meat, etc.  Rice is ok. My thoughts are rice cakes and rice chex etc.  Does anyone have any receipes for some sort of "biscuit" that we can make? thanks

Response:

There’s kamut, amaranth, buckwheat and barley flours available, none of which are true grains.  Just substitute – dogs don’t mind! buglady take out the dog before replying

Response:

Or use carrot, apple, pear…also, there are treats available made only of liver or salmon (assuming the dog isn’t allergic to any of the above) Dorothy, owned by C.C., a very spoiled dachshund

Response:

all meat?  how did the vet come up with that one?  Did  they do allergy testing? There is kibble made with venison, duck, and other types of meat that the dog probably hasn’t been exposed to.  maybe you should try those? — Giselle check out gracie’s new site (and sign her guestbook!) http://gracieannwaggily.tripod.com

There is a couple kibbles where the protein molecule is broken down to where unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.  Hills Ultra Z/D and Purina HA are the 2 made that I know of.   As far as treats find some treat recipes and start substituting ingredients if it’s not quite what should be eating.  It’s what I’ve done for the food allergic dog I have.   Lana & Linsey (newfs), Sonny (pyr)   http://home.austin.rr.com/janices/ Hutto, TX
