I am in the NYC metropolitan area, so the insurance costs more (I think) even though my vet fees are very reasonable. I just switched from the most expensive plan ($484 per year) which covers just about everything, including every vet visit, to the middle plan, which costs $300 per year and includes everything related to illness/injury and one wellness visit per year, DHLPP vaccine, rabies vaccine, and heartworm testing. Both plans have $100 deductible, then they pay 80% (you pay the vet and get reimbursed) Dorothy, owned by C.C., a very spoiled dachshund

I have Premier Pet and have been satisfied with them. It takes about 5 weeks to receive payment from them. The cost depends on  which plan you choose and where you live; you can check their website http://www.premierpetinsurance.com/, where I think you can get a quote on-line. It isn’t cheap, and you will probably not recoup your costs unless you have huge vet bills, but it is like insurance for yourself- you hope you never need it but are glad you have it if you do need it. (my friend was going to cancel her insurance on the anniversary date in January; unfortunately, her dog was diagnosed with mast-cell cancer, and she is now glad she has the insurance) Dorothy, owned by C.C., a very spoiled dachshund

Well, they (VPI) did not cover bloat (GDV) in my dogs, as it is a "breed predisposition". They did not cover hemorragic gastroenteritis, as there must have been a predisposition. They do not cover aspiration pneumonia, as it is a "breed predisposition". Etc. Plus the fact that you have to pay your vet bills upfront anyway, and wait 4+ months for a decision. My pet insurance has been long cancelled, and we set up an automatic withdrawal plan which puts money in a savings account earmarked dog emergency. JMO. — Toni http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com
