Question on Invisible Fence

Question:

My DH’s parent’s mini-dachshund uses this.  BW has never gotten out of the yard (except for the day that one of the kids unplugged it in order to use the hair dryer) but it does not keep other animals out.  BW was attacked by a bear 2 weeks ago.  She luckily did not die, but both hips were broken as well as the base of her back.  She had to have one hip completely rebuilt, the other hip has a pin in it and her tail is paralized and will have to be docked (they’re waiting to let her recover from the last surgery first, though).   Invisible fencing can be very good, but in order to really keep your dog fence, use the non-invisible kind. Response:

It depends on the dog.  Is it a hunting breed, the fence isn’t going to work.  The dog will"jump" the fence to get out, but it won’t go through the barrier to get back in(it wanted that rabbit, but to go back over, its not gonna get zapped again). Yikes, that’s horrible!

I just posted about my experience with Invisible Fence on rec.pets.dogs.behavior, I will cross-post it here.  Basically, Invisible fence kept my ever-escaping dog on our property — something months of training couldn’t.  If you spend the time training the dog with the Invisible Fence, it will likely work.  Our dog had been a stray for about 6 months and loved to escape to fight other dogs (he’s a big Akita/Shephard mix).  We would have had to return him to the pound, this was our last shot, and it worked far better than we expected. Maria, it is great that this worked out for you and thanks for saving a pound pup! Debbie
