Okay, so I watched the show last night. While I certainly agree that FOX is using these film clips to shock and titillate viewers, and that the dog portion was not fun to watch, I do have to say one thing. Robert Urich was the host of the show. Before each dog segment he carefully stated that dogs are not vicious unless they are either abused, or trained to be so. There was a segment with a pit bull and a segment with two rotties, followed by a "re-creation" of an attack by a wolf hybrid, and something that showed pictures of three mixed breeds which apparently killed a little girl. Aside from the fact that I hate this kind of sensationalistic programming and thought the whole show was stupid, I thought they handled things in a semi-responsible manner. The only dog they spoke about as a "breed," was the wolf-hybrid. They interviewed a wolf expert who said these animals were quite unstable, and that when the dog’s lack of fear of man was combined with the wolf’s high prey drive, attacks could happen. Nevertheless, identifying and showing attacks by any purebred dog, or any dog at all for that matter, is an inherently irresponsible thing to do. — Robin, Jasper and Dreamer (my opinions are strictly my own!) Please forward this message to your respective email lists, dog bulletin boards, and to your individual dog clubs. One of the subscribers to the Bull Terrier list posted the following message last night regarding an upcoming TV special on the FOX network. Due to the alarming trend toward breed-specific legislation, the Bull Terrier list members want to warn all dog breeds about this special, and ask for your support. Programs like this contribute to public hysteria, and are the root of the growing local laws restricting ownership of MANY breeds (see the AKC website for recent legislation, if you are not already aware). This will affect not only "Pit Bull" owners, but owners of any "Bull breed", Rottweillers, Dobermans, Chows, and a number of other breeds for which restrictive legislation has already been passed. Please support positive public images — and show your non-support of negative public images — of specific dog breeds by lodging your protest with the FOX network now! It will be a big help if you also get recognized dog clubs, veterinarians, SPCAs or additional "voices" to join in. The more breeds represented the greater the impact. THANK YOU. Roxana Lopez, Bull Terrier-H List Moderator Here are the posts on this program from our list… Hi folks, There will be a TV show on next Sunday regarding "dangerous animals" on the FOX network. needless to say in the annual fall attempt at improving ratings the TV stations have resorted to sensationalism again. In two segments of the show there will be film footage of Pit Bull attacks on people. This is not the kind of image that needs to be continually perpetuated for Bull and Terrier breeds. Like the rest of you I love my English Bull Terrier, but I feel obligated to defend other Bully breeds in order that they may reciprocate the favour; i.e. Anti-Bully legislation. In both attacks, the dogs are owned by disreputable people. The blame should not be placed upon the dog, but the irresponsible owners who have created such ‘monsters’. Does anbody agree with me? If so, maybe we could write the station and express our dissatisfaction with their programming and portrayal of animals. Thank-you for reading this, signed a concerned ;-( Peter B., Ontario, Canada WHEN ANIMALS ATTACK #2 Sunday Novenber 3, 1996 – 9:00-10:00PM EASTERN/PACIFIC This is the sequel to last season’s huge hit special that looked at our unpredictable relationship with animals. In addition to compelling footage of human encounters with dangerous animals, the show will offer advice from wildlife experts and animal activists. Robert Urich returns to host.
