Spaying and neutering

Question:

> But what some shelters need to do is describe the animals when they reach > sexual maturity and their need to mate/go into heat, and what happens to > their personality.

I really, really want to hope that the choice of spaying/neutering considers much more important things than the heath behavior… I don’t mind a cat in heath and my boy never sprayed. I can agree about avoiding cancers to "single" cats, I can agree about avoiding spraying, I can agree about avoiding unwanted kittens, but behavior is a really selfish motivation…

Response:

I have two cats at work who were adopted from a shelter.  Stinky (female) was three months old at the time and Harriet was 1 1/2 years.  Stinky was still pretty young to be spayed but I was surprised that Harriet wasn’t. The shelter had both of them for just one day before I took them.  Harriet’s original owner(s) had her declawed, but not spayed.  The stupidity of some people amazes me.  The shelter allowed me to take them both and I had to sign a form saying I would have them spayed.  The placed I called for the spaying said they wouldn’t do Stinky until she was at least five months old, so I mad an appoitment for both of them.  Harriet went into heat once before she was spayed.  Harriet can be pretty nasty, but while she was in heat she was absolutely loveable.  We joked that we should leave her that way.  Both came through their operations just fine and I KNOW that they’re much better off. If more humans were spayed/neutered perhaps the procedure wouldn’t be such a necessity for cats.

Response:

I think the people who fail to spay or neuter their animals probably know the facts but they just don’t want to admit they’re wrong. Yes… It is.  There is this friend at school who got  a kitten who is now 6 months.  I keep asking "when are you getting her fixed?"  blah blah blah (he’s a nice guy, he doesn’t get annoyed — and he is going to get her spayed).  But he had no clue about her going into heat or anything!  He seemed really surprised when I was talking about it – how her going into heat the first time could happen anytime now, and how it is so much better to catch it before this happens etc.  So I am not too sure, but I guess some people really don’t know about what happens – but it is pretty sick when they do (ie: that vet tech) and still don’t help the animals! But what some shelters need to do is describe the animals when they reach sexual maturity and their need to mate/go into heat, and what happens to their personality.  When I adopted both my cats, they didn’t describe this, nor did they tell me they would be in pain and the benefits of spay/neuter (just said to bring them back in 3-4 months).  I found this out on my own! Why wouldn’t they describe this?  It’s totally something someone should know so they actually DO bring the animal back in!!!  I can imagine a lot of people (like my friend) would possibly never find out about this. — Jen http://cats.ejepo.com

Yup.  When I got my kitten, a male, I mentioned to the fellow who rescued/found him that with a male I wouldn’t have to worry about neutering, since he would be an indoor cat.  He said that being unneutered is torture to a cat who has no access to relief.  It hadn’t even occurred to me that it might be physically *better* for the cat to be neutered.  His offhand statement really changed the way I looked at things.     Chakolate — It is never too late to be what you might have been.  George Eliot

I, personally, dislike the concept of spay/neuter but believe it is a necessity. All anyone has to do is walk down the corridor of cats and dogs in a humane society all barking and meowing the same message to you… "Help me, I’m almost at the end of my 5 days here and they are going to euthanize me.". and knowing that you are powerless to help them because your backyard is not big enough to hold the 7,500 out of 10,000 pets yearly which are euthanized in our county alone. Hi all. I was on one of the chat sites that I frequent and you won’t believe how many people on there who actually don’t believe in spaying or neutering their animal friends. The excuse I heard from one person who seems to breed dogs is that her dogs won’t get out. Another said they keep their dogs in and they are welled cared for. Imagine my surprise when one of them said they were a vet tech. My advise to her was to go back to school. Most vets if not all suggest spaying and neutering at some point but on that topic she said the vets were only recommending spaying or neutering to make money.  I was the only one in that chat who is for people spaying and neutering their four legged friends. My argument. It helps prevent overpopulation and helps keep the shelters from always reaching capacity because people fail to spay and neuter their pets. Not to mention keeps them healthier. It was funny when I asked this so called dog breeder why the shelters don’t let you adopt an animal unsless they are spayed or neutered. Her response was not surprising. She had no idea and she won’t go to shelters because of the way they are kept. I think this translates into "I add to the problem so I choose to live in ignorance and be a complete fool." Regardless on whether or not her argument was that she keeps every puppy that is born she still adds to the overpopulation problem. How many of you have heard people say "I don’t spay or neuter my pet because the animal won’t get out?" Or the always famous "my cat or dog would be hurt by such an operation and be in pain and I can’t put them through that." Guess what happens when that cat or dog gets out though. They have litter and they either end up in shelters, dumped to fend for themselves, or even worse in the hands of animal abusers who do the animal harm.  I know that everyone here knows it is good to have your animal spayed or neutered. I just wanted you all here to see what I was up against in this argument. Nonetheless as they called me names (insulting me, my cat and my family) and such for being a supporter of spay and neutering I stood my ground. It also made me happy to be a part of this newsgroup because we all know the truth while these idiots prefer to be part of the problem and not the solution.  With so many of them around there will always be those who stand up and say no more and rescue the animals that end up in tough spots because their humans refuse to take responsibility in providing them with a good and stable environment. One thing I said before I left was this. I dared any one of them to go to work at a shelter and see for themsleves what their irresponsibility has caused. I am sure none of them stood up immediately and said ok. Why? Because they are afraid of seeing the truth and admitting they were wrong. They’d be too proud to admit fault and acknowledge the fact they helped be part of the problem and not the solution. One thing I can say is that these people don’t deserve to have the company of their four legged friends. Simply put, their four legged friends deserve better. On my end I prefer to be part of the solution and soon when all is ok with my cat Isis (who I originally adopted from the Humane Society) I will rescue another cat from the shelter and hopefully give them the same loving environment I have given Isis. I whole-heartedly agree with everything you said, Cat Protector.  It is a shame that some people (sadly, a lot of people) are blind to the truth, or simply don’t care about all the lives being lost every day.  All we can do is make an attempt to educate, which you tried and I commend you.

Well these idiots who were in the chat last night actually believe that it is better not to have an animal spayed or neutered. Their excuse was that it’d hurt the animal and that the animal would never get out. The message they put out is that they simply don’t care.

Because, I choose to say I care. — Cat Galaxy- The Internet radio station for cats. Meow meow meow!! http://www.live365.com/stations/231353 Real Player and Winamp: 64.152.82.193:10518

I whole-heartedly agree with everything you said, Cat Protector.  It is a shame that some people (sadly, a lot of people) are blind to the truth, or simply don’t care about all the lives being lost every day.  All we can do is make an attempt to educate, which you tried and I commend you. BTW, my Aurora is going to be spayed on Monday.  I ask you and Isis to keep her in your thoughts that day, ok? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi all. >I was on one of the chat sites that I frequent and you won’t believe how >many people on there who actually don’t believe in spaying or neutering >their animal friends. The excuse I heard from one person who seems to breed >dogs is that her dogs won’t get out. Another said they keep their dogs in >and they are welled cared for. Imagine my surprise when one of them said >they were a vet tech. My advise to her was to go back to school. Most vets >if not all suggest spaying and neutering at some point but on that topic she >said the vets were only recommending spaying or neutering to make money.  I >was the only one in that chat who is for people spaying and neutering their >four legged friends. My argument. It helps prevent overpopulation and helps >keep the shelters from always reaching capacity because people fail to spay >and neuter their pets. Not to mention keeps them healthier. >It was funny when I asked this so called dog breeder why the shelters don’t >let you adopt an animal unsless they are spayed or neutered. Her response >was not surprising. She had no idea and she won’t go to shelters because of >the way they are kept. I think this translates into "I add to the problem so >I choose to live in ignorance and be a complete fool." Regardless on whether >or not her argument was that she keeps every puppy that is born she still >adds to the overpopulation problem. How many of you have heard people say "I >don’t spay or neuter my pet because the animal won’t get out?" Or the always >famous "my cat or dog would be hurt by such an operation and be in pain and >I can’t put them through that." Guess what happens when that cat or dog gets >out though. They have litter and they either end up in shelters, dumped to >fend for themselves, or even worse in the hands of animal abusers who do the >animal harm.  I know that everyone here knows it is good to have your animal >spayed or neutered. I just wanted you all here to see what I was up against >in this argument. Nonetheless as they called me names (insulting me, my cat >and my family) and such for being a supporter of spay and neutering I stood >my ground. It also made me happy to be a part of this newsgroup because we >all know the truth while these idiots prefer to be part of the problem and >not the solution.  With so many of them around there will always be those >who stand up and say no more and rescue the animals that end up in tough >spots because their humans refuse to take responsibility in providing them >with a good and stable environment. One thing I said before I left was this. >I dared any one of them to go to work at a shelter and see for themsleves >what their irresponsibility has caused. I am sure none of them stood up >immediately and said ok. Why? Because they are afraid of seeing the truth >and admitting they were wrong. They’d be too proud to admit fault and >acknowledge the fact they helped be part of the problem and not the >solution. One thing I can say is that these people don’t deserve to have the >company of their four legged friends. Simply put, their four legged friends >deserve better. On my end I prefer to be part of the solution and soon when >all is ok with my cat Isis (who I originally adopted from the Humane >Society) I will rescue another cat from the shelter and hopefully give them >the same loving environment I have given Isis.
