Rotties,kind and harmless

Question:

Hello i am from Sweden and i own two wonderful rotties. And i cant understand you people in USA.Why do all people thinks that a rottie always bite …You cant be more wrong. Its a great family dog in all ways,so stop buying rotties to protect your self. They are not bad by nature. All dogs can be dangerus in wrong hands even a  littel one.If you are mean with the dog,the dog gets mean with you….pleas be free to send me a mail.<<< Problem here in the states is that people read something in the paper or see it on TV and that becomes the way they look at things.  Rots are kind and harmless but they still make a good guard dog. Without any training a Rot protects it’s owner just because he loves his master!  Rots are also generally non agressive to people but I do see them get into lost of fights with other dogs – mainly male vs. male.  Guess they are used to being the alpha dog wherever they go and try to prove themself against every large dog they see. see ya steve

Madde Your ideas cannot be packaged quite as neatly as you would like. Certain dogs breeds and the problems attached to them, differ from area to area, country to country. I have been involved with the breeding, showing and training of dogs of different breeds in many parts of the world so hopefully can give you a little insight into what is going on. Very sadly in recent years with the decline of our cities and the enormous increase in gang activity and other borderline crimininal types, there has also been a marked and sharp increase in these same individuals, going into dog breeding in a big way. Unlike the rest of us, who (hopefully) only breed well adjusted top quality animals with a known solid background, these types always breed for the opposite. They breed only for aggressive dogs. Puppies from these litters find a ready market in places like southern alifornia where the private rescue centers are filled to overflowing with mainly, the three breeds of choice – at the moment anyway, and that could change. Namely, Rottweilers, Chows and Pit Bulls. Last week there were 73 Rottweilers in my local rescue and understand that there are hundreds more rescues with quick driving distance. Many of these dogs will be found wanting in temperament, and will have to be destroyed. Too dangerous to place. And no, in spite of what I read and hear, not all these dogs have been abused. Some dogs have been bred from several generations now, of aggressive parents. Mixes of these breeds and mixes of these breeds with others is also taking place, flooding the market with thousands of hopelessly helpless dogs, each in turn owned by people who should never be allowed to own a dog in the first place, each breeding the dog at everyopportunity. I have personally had one of these teen gang members "sic" his Pit Bull on me while obedience training another breed. Unfortunately his dog was easily put off by the counter attack of my much larger – and properly trained dog. However, this occurs daily and one takes ones life in ones hands if deciding to take ones dog for a walk in many places in S.California these days. Gang members have now even formed aggression obedience groups for their animals. As you can see, when you have an enormous problem like this going on, the well bred dogs, from the serious dog fancier, can get lost in the crowd, and certainly the amount of seriously wanting dogs in these breeds far outweigh the amount of good ones. People who know no better will often buy a pup from these backyard breeders and find themselves and their family in disastrous situations when these dogs eventually grow up. Hence the enormous increase in dog bites lately. In case you have ideas that I have something against the breeds I mention, I have not. I happen to own and have finished to her championship, one of the dogs I mention here, have two friends seriously in another of the breeds I mention.  It happens that the three breeds I write of here are suffering greatly. I often hear people say there are no bad or aggressive puppies. After a lifetime in dogs, I must differ. When aggressive behaviour is desired and bred from, indeed a whole breed can become untrustworthy in a hurry. Maybe not in your area. Maybe you have not seen it. Bit believe me, it is there and it is going on. It might reach your town one day. Come to my area Madde, and you will find that 75% of the Rottweilers in this town, are definitely not kind and harmless. What’s to be done. Personal opinion here. I think anyone breeding dogs should be required to obedience train every dog in their kennel, all dogs should be temperament tested before breeding, and the owners of any breeding dog, should be required to pass stiff tests before permits are handed out. And I am not talking about kennel licenses whichsome seem to think denotes a person who knows hat they are doing. Most big puppy mills have kennel licenses. Many areas in the world are not suffering the way the big cities are here in the US and therefore have not seen what is happening in the world of the dog. I saw this starting to happen way back in the 60’s when I was writing for a local paper, and even then I stated that then was the time to do something as I could see a slow, silent trend appearing. Nobody listened, but it looks like I was right. E.Anderson.

Yes Madde, I have to agree with Ann, not all people in the US think Rotties are mean.  I can’t wait to get my own house or at least rent in a house with yard so I can get one of those wonderfully attractive and cool temperament dogs. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hello i am from Sweden and i own two wonderful rotties. And i cant >understand you people in USA.Why do all people thinks that a rottie always >bite …You cant be more wrong. Its a great family dog in all ways,so stop >buying rotties to protect your self. They are not bad by nature. All dogs can >be dangerus in wrong hands even a  littel one.If you are mean with the >dog, the dog gets mean with you….pleas be free to send me a mail…. >–

Madde – not all people in the USA think Rottie are dangerous.  But unfortunately some people are blind to the fact that any dog of any breed can be.  Just as unfortunate is the fact, that thought is a concept held  by people in many countries around the world, as breed-specific legisation is a world wide issue.  Sad but true.
