Plus in Seattle they ding you for a $45 annual permit and $150 false alarm fine. My neighbor disconnected her service after 2 false alarms. Alarm systems can also be easily defeated. Just cut the phone line wires. Most houses have a big gray box where the phone service connects to the house. Just cut the wire and your alarm system can not call anyone. Some alarm system companies will call the house if the alarm system goes off. Smart burglars will answer the phone and say sorry I accidentally set it off. David

Everyone keeps talking about how guns will protect you from burglars. Bullshit! The last time my place was burglarized they took my rifle down from the shelf in the closet and took it out of the case and looked at it. A couple of people have mentioned this, but let me emphasize it: Whatever you do, make absolutely certain that any bars you buy are approved for use in an occupancy and have a quick release mechanism that allows you to escape in case of a fire. There was a horrific case here a few years ago in which a fairly large family died in a fire that they all could have easily escaped had they not had burglar bars on their windows. Frankly, I think that there are probably better and safer solutions. Kate Ebneter Collector of Noise Toys

This question got me thinking I should get some bars up. At work tonight I talked to one of the set shop carps at the theatre I was working and she said she’d weld me up some outta old bicycle frames. Free material and cheap if I do all the design, cutting and layout. Gonna figure out how to get some bug screen in the mid section so they can be left open these coming summer nights. jeffb

(D’oh, you knew that, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to state the obvious.) All that having been said, I’d suggest you find another location. Word will get out and your stuff will disappear one day. I’d make an effort to document every thing you’ve got. Use a digital camera and write down serial numbers and descriptions. In short, keep a good inventory of your pieces and keep a duplicate of the inventory somewhere else, like your place of work or your relative’s or neighbor’s house. Use it to get insurance and schedule each piece of equipment. This is a special kind of insurance, not your general homeowners blanket contents coverage. Any insurance person worth his/her salt will sell you the right kind of policy or rider. Good luck, Phil Symonds

I’d be very careful about blocking potential ways out of a burning building. I think some types have a release from the inside. Other ideas: Alarm system (or at least a phony sign and window decals). Cut any bushes away so they can be seen. Lighting, although most burglaries happen during the day or whenver the person works. Sure, the bar around the corner has lots of burglars in it. You have your choice of abandoned houses where I work. You could burgle the bars off of any of those houses without raising an eyebrow. Option three involves you buying Bud’s Hamburgler P/J bass. After you go to sleep, the bass comes to life and pulls the perfect inside job. Everyone keeps talking about how guns will protect you from burglars. Bullshit! The last time my place was burglarized they took my rifle down from the shelf in the closet and took it out of the case and looked at it. I figure if it was a handgun they would have stolen it, but did not want to walk down the street carrying a gun. A lot of good that gun did for me! DA

Guns won’t do shit for you, unless you’re there, and the gun is loaded (and you need to know what you’re doing). German Shepherds (or name your favorite breed) will do a lot more for your protection. And unlike a home owner who’s being burglarize, the dog is thinking very clearly in this situation. Pete — My God! It’s the future. –Fry
