Update on Anja's ear infections

Question:

For a month now my Chihauhau has had an infection in his right ear. The vet put him on a months worth of antibiotics and gave me drops to put in the ears daily. It was so bad that each time he shook his ears he got so dizzy he actually tucked his head into his chest and fell over. He still walks with a bad head tilt; still shakes his ears upon rising and the only significant improvement I’ve seen is that when he does shake his ears he no longer gets so dizzy he falls over. That is in fact a BIG improvement. the head tilt bothers me though. Also, his ears (he has HUGE ears that stand up) until about last week were really dark red all on the inside and now they are white again as they should be…so I guess slowly he is improving but again, that tilted head still worries me. Anyone else have this problem?

Response:

Jenn, yeast infections can stay in the body for a long time. The reason the yogurt was partially working was the good cultured bacteria in there. It sounds like you are interested in a natural way to solve this problem, so go to www.caninemedicinechest.com  these people can help, they did me.   Tom

Our vet told us that after our Lab x had a yeast infection in his ear that dogs may produce a lot more ear wax than normal after an infection and that sometimes this goes away, but sometimes it doesn’t.

Hi all. I want to thank everyone for all the wonderful tips and advice I received in here concerning my German Shepherd Dog Anja and her recurrent ear infections. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to read this ng so I thought I’ve drop a line to let everyone who was interested know how it’s going with us. She was on SD z/d Ultra for 3 months and had one ear infection during that time, about 3 weeks into the food change. After the three month period I challenged her system with the old food, Eukanuba Senior Large Breed. This did not cause an infection, thankfully. I have slowly been trying new ingredients to see if they have caused anything. In short, it does not look like a food allergy at all. I am going to start feeding a regular (meaning, non-prescription) food when this bag of sd z/d runs out. The vet still won’t give me any definite answer on what the cause could be. Understandable, as there is no way to tell yet. I have started added yogurt to her food again, as it does seem to work at keeping away yeast ear infections. Perhaps all her bacterial infections started as yeast infections and got worse? The vet can’t answer that, I’m hoping someone here can. Otherwise we wait until next winter and see if another infection occurs between now and then. If not, then it is likely a seasonal allergy, if so it is more of an environmental allergy. I thought it might be a problem with water in her ears, but she has been really wet a lot this summer (swimming, rain, the hose, etc.) and nothing seems to have caused an infection. She does still have really dirty ears. I have been diligent this last year with cleaning them, as I never was before, twice a week with Vet Solutions Ear Cleaner. Could infections simply have been caused by my inadequacy with proper grooming? I guess any of the above things could be equally possible. I don’t really expect answers to them. I suppose I am just thinking out loud so to speak. I just wanted everyone who helped me know how things are going. Again, thanks for your help in the past, Jenn And Anja — Jenn S "…But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity, like emptiness in harmony…." Paul Simon
