What would Staffy x Chow be like ?

Very much agree with you…have been able to go on 14 hr drives and no problem. The only time he shows agression is when a man comes near my wife at night but hey, who can complain about that. They tend to be very protective…much like a doberman I had once. > I LOVE them. I would have another, but I just don’t want to ever > deal with all that fur again.:(
Simple…hardwood floors and a few large garbage bags in the spring! Pierre

I agree with the entirety of Diane’s response. I would add a bit on the important subject of compatibility with children. This cross is *not* one I’d recommend for young children. As has been pointed out, this particular individual dog could turn out to be wonderful with kids, but in general, this breed combination is less than ideal. Chows can be very standoffish. Your kids, or more likely your kids’ friends, running up to them and grabbing them may be unwelcome and ill received. Chows’ looks–that of big furry teddy bears–invite this kind of response from children, but their appearance can be very misleading. Also, to make matters worse, Chows are known to bite without much apparent warning. So the well-meaning kids may not even receive a cautionary growl to discourage them. The Staffy genes may make the chow much more sociable with kids. If, however, they do not, and the dog does one day bite a child, the bite may be a lot worse than a quick nip that breaks the skin. Lastly, the parents of other children may be understandably uncomfortable allowing their kids to play with this dog, even if you know it to be gentle and loving to all children. Ironically, the ‘Pitbull’ half is more likely to scare of them than the Chow half. | > How would such a cross (Staffy x Chow) get along with young kids and the | > above mentioned pets? | | Children – depends upon the children and the | degree of supervision.

Actually most chows that I have met are mellow. But I have met a few that were not nice. I LOVE them. I would have another, but I just don’t want to ever deal with all that fur again.:( Gwen

i’m out of film, so i didn’t get pictures. i’ll try to get some this weekend, though, cuz it’s awfully darned cute. i’ve also got some new pictures of harriet lounging on the couch in some pretty silly positions. i’m going to (hopefully!) get my website back up this weekend with new pictures. wheee! — shelly and elliott & harriet

yep, that’s harriet! i’ve got pictures of her half on and half off the couch, just snoozing away. i don’t know how she does it! her new favorite is the doggie burrito. at bedtime, i wrap her up in a comforter. she actually stays wrapped up until morning. i need to hook my scanner up, too. i moved in April and still haven’t gotten around to setting it back up. — shelly and elliott & harriet

You must get a photo of that! Doggie Burrito, great definition! You gotta get that scanner up and running! But my whole house is still in shambles. Getting closer to be fixed but I am still in Travel trailer.:(( No puter, no scanner at this time. I hope to be in the house by Dec. 1. Gwen

They are quite cat like. I don’t get many Chows in obedience classes, but the ones that I do are very disdainful of training. Far from dumb, but very disinterested in pleasing the owner. I kinda like Chows, the well bred ones that I have met are quite mellow. Dogstar716 Come see Gunnars Life: http://hometown.aol.com/dogstar716/index.html

It has been a painful experience though. All this has been going on since early Aug. So yes this next 4 weeks will pass quickly indeed.:)) Gwen PS ya just gotta get photos of Harriet in these cute sleeping positions.:)))

so you’re 3/4 of the way through. the rest of it’ll be a relative piece of cake. i’ve lived in a tiny one-room apartment with three cats and one big dog, so i know how cramped it must be for ya’ll. >PS ya just gotta get photos of Harriet in these cute >sleeping positions.:)))
okey dokey! actually, i can’t wait to play with my webpages. wheee! i’ve got a butt-load of links i need to sift through for my links section, but first, the important part: pictures! — shelly and elliott & harriet

it’s pretty darned cute. i wrap her up completely except for the tip of her nose. i don’t know how she can stand it. she will also get under the covers and climb down to the foot of the bed and sleep there for most of the night. i get a turtle headache just thinking about the lack of air! >You gotta get that scanner up and running!
i’m going to try my darndest to get it up and running. i have tomorrow off, so i don’t have any excuses. Saturday i’m helping a friend tear down a yome and move it. but i’ve got Sunday free, too. that should leave plenty of time to get my act together, right? >But my whole >house is still in shambles. why, thank you! i’ll have to tell him you said so. he’s been extra cute lately because of the nippy weather. it makes him act like a frisky, silly little puppy. he was playing peek-a-boo last night. it’s been years since we’ve played that and i’d forgotten all about it. he was laying on his side on the floor and kept putting his paws up over his eyes and then peeking out at me. i *swear* he was giggling! it was just *too* impossibly cute. — shelly and elliott & harriet

awwww. he sounds *beautiful*! elliott is short, stocky, and big-headed but has plush fur and the most beautiful Pit Bull ears (only fuzzy). he’s got almond-shaped Pit Bull eyes, too. he’s a Very Pretty Boy. >Anyway, while he was very friendly, he was also not interested in doing a sit >for a treat. hah! i have a friend who says that Chows are actually Cat x Klingon. i think she’s dead-on. i love ‘em to death, but i can see why they don’t appeal to everyone. it can be difficult to figure out how to motivate them. luckily for me, elliott has Pit Bull enthusiasm to spare. he’ll work for treats, smiles, pats, or, i suspect, just for the fun of it. he occasionally has convenient hearing, but isn’t nearly as hard-headed as many of the Chows i’ve met. — shelly and elliott & harriet

Well both the other posts are dead on – might be good might not – assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised when they are better. I would expect that you would only have to pay a nominal fee however since they really are mutts. No different than what you might find in the pound. Anything more than the usual and customary fee you would pay there is too much.

We have a lot of staffxchow mixes at work. (veterinary clinic) They all have great personalities for their owners ( who love them ) and they all have at least one of the ‘bad’ traits for each breed. And they are nice dogs to us , adults who have learned how to guage a dogs temperment and approach accordingly. That said, all of those ‘bad’ traits are ones that I wouldn’t want in a dog if I had, or planned, to be around children. The responsiblity of a dog agressive ( child gets in the middle of a fight while walking Fido in the park ) , or a person protective (little Bobbies friend approaches and something just doesn’t feel right to Fido). Our groomers have been bitten by more chows than any other breed, and the dr’s have fixed more bitten staffy ears. I love qualities in both breeds, like the staffys pleasing personality, and the chows regal, snooty attitude. Both are the right breed for somebody but is it for you? meighan veterinary receptionist mom to one Staffy, one GSD, and one Husky/Mal X.

I was at a shelter the other day, and pulled a Staffie/Chow male out to work with. While he was an interesting looking fellow, short and compact like a Staffie, with an extremely large head and a face like a Chow. Short coat, and spotted tongue. Looked rather like a large French Bulldog
Anyway, while he was very friendly, he was also not interested in doing a sit for a treat. He figured out that he got a treat when he sat, but if I asked him to sit? He would sniff disdainfully and walk away. Very Chow-ish in nature

Just expect that you will get the worst gtraits of each breed, and you can be delighted if instead you get the best of each. Expect a very high level of dog aggression. Expect little obvious sign that an assault on another dog is near. > The pups are 4 and a half weeks old and we have to make a decision soon if > we want to get one. > What would the temperament be like? Any other needs?
A lot of people complain that Chows are hard to read. They have a stoic standoffish manner that some people appreciate as dignity, while others see as arrogance. It is largely a matter of personal taste. > I have two cats – a neutered male and spayed female, and a neutered border > collie cross – who all get on alright together. > How would such a cross (Staffy x Chow) get along with young kids and the > above mentioned pets?
I would not get the same sex as the Border Collie – chances of future problems way too high. Children – depends upon the children and the degree of supervision. Cats – who knows. Both breeds CAN work out OK with cats, on the other hand both breeds have been known to kill cats they grew up with. > I would appreciate any ideas.
A lot depends upon the temperament of the parents. If there is anything at all you don’t like about the temperament of the parents then don’t take a puppy. You can be nearly 100% sure that the the "worst" of the temperaments you see in each parent is what you are going to get. I don’t really mean that in a scientifically true way, but more in that’s how fate works. <snip> First let me thank all of you who have responded with helpful advice Just to clear up a few points 1. I did not mean to stir up the little flame war but that poster can rest assured that the dogs were not intentionally bred, The female staffy "escaped" while on heat. (This was posted to other thread by the same name which was from the first post I made which I imediatley cancelled – but quite clearly not soon enough as both posts seem to have propgated.) 2. The Staffy I am referring to is a Staffordshire Bullterrier and not the AmStaff – I have just learned something – if nothing else not to assume that a common name is the same all parts of the world – I have neever even heard of the American Staffaordshire terrier until now!!! The mother (Staffy) is adorable – just over a year and lives in a home with a Golden Retriever and two kids (about 6 and 8yrs) The father (Chow) I have yet to meet, but since he lives in the same complex I will endeavour to meet him before making my final descision, in addition to doing more reading up on the two breeds. it’s hard to tell with mixed breed dogs. the pup could be more Chow-like, more Staffy-like, like a mix of the two, or like neither. how’s that for helpful?
have you met the parents? are they both good-natured dogs? do they like children? are the pups being well socialized with adults, children, dogs, and cats? have you researched both Chows and AmStaffs? AmStaffs can be dog aggressive and it often doesn’t show up until the dog has reached full maturity. OTOH, they’re generally *very* people friendly. Chows can be a little stand-offish, though IMO they’ve got a fantastic sense of humor. both breeds can be hard-headed and need good, life-long socialization and obedience training. that said, i have a Pit Bull x Chow who is perfectly happy to share his home with a Boxer girl and two cats. he’s fantastic with people (especially kids!) and good with "his" cats. he’s a little stand-offish with unknown, dominant dogs, though, and *will* fight them if they insist on it. of the dogs i’ve lived with and known well, he’s easily the best natured. his temperament is 24 carat gold. good luck! — shelly and elliott & harriet
