dog colors

Question:

dog colors have got to be a female thing…y’all just get a kick out of naming the same color 50 different ways, don’t ya? Paul…who has been through this female-trying-to-confuse-the-guy-and-still-ain’t-sure-if-he-survived-it thing before…

Response:

>> red (dobes) > chocolate (labs) > liver (pointers) > bronze (newfs) > for the same color!

  Don’t forget "Deadgrass" Jana  &Bonnie

Response:

>Sticking with bb dogs for the moment, I can think of: >red (dobes) >chocolate (labs) >liver (pointers) >bronze (newfs)

don’t forget these: brown (poodles + many other breeds) bark (Finnish Lapphund and Lapponian herder) deadgrass (Chesapeake Bay retriever) Liisa

Response:

>I was told my 7 week old female is Merle because she has a >half brown and half blue eye

Not necessarily….there are a number of breeds that can have different colored eyes, or half and half colored eyes that are not merles. Siberian Huskies, Berners(I don’t think these are allowed in the conformation ring) are two that come immediately to mind. And bb in American water spaniels (all are bb) can be – Chocolate Liver *-or-* Brown depending on shade.  (We spent a bit of time trying to figure out which he was for the registration). Melissa > –Cindy > —

Yes, you can do that.  Just remember that same words in different breeds mean totally different things.  Like BLUE.  If it is a Dane, it is dd dilute.  A "blue" Poodle is dark grey, perhaps heterozygous silver Gg, and a "blue" Collie is black-based merle.  And RED.  In some breeds "red" dogs are dark bb chocolates (Doberman), in other lighter bb chocolates (Siberian Husky) and in most breeds either bright Ay sables (Mastiff) or rufous ee recessive yellows (Irish Setter). And if your light YELLOWish dog is a Boxer, it is fawn.  If it is a Poodle, it is cream.  An English Setter is lemon, an American Cocker is buff, Wheaten Terrier is – right – wheaten, Labrador is yellow, Golden Retriever is golden.  in some breeds it might be champagne, straw-colored or something else. To further add to the confusion… the same color can be known by different names in different breeds. Think of all the names for that reddish-tan…… buff, red, gold, dark cream, cinnamon, light apricot, etc. Of course a breed purist will recognize all the subtle differences, but not JQP! — Toni www.irish-wolfhounds.com Click the "Update on Steve"

And not some people, quite a few men for example,  have a difficult time with different shades and variances in color.   And, I’m not saying that to be sexist, but it’s a fact that many more men have varying degree of colorblindness.    (My DH, one of my brothers & my Dad…) It’s a tricky business!    ’Course, then you’ve got the horse folks that bring in colors like "Roan", and "Bay" and such too…*grin* Shelly, Coda & Guiness…

I wanted to clarify…Simon the dog pictured on my web page is Brindled..I know that..I adopted a New pup who I told was Merle I guess some people thought I was asking what Simon was….Sorry for the confusion….I was told my 7 week old female is Merle because she has a half brown and half blue eye http://community.webtv.net/KissyFooFoo/MeandSimon

If she is white with black spots, as you described, she is not merle.  However, merle dogs are not the only color that has the odd blue eye.  In my breed, Aussies, which do come in merle, blue eyes are common.  Less common, but occurring just the same are blue eyed blacks and black tris.  I also know a Berner bitch that has a half blue eye and she is decidedly not a merle. Here is a url to the blue merle portion of Lisa MacDonald’s site on color inheritance of the Australian Shepherd.  Different breed, but it will give you something to compare too. http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Runway/3559/blue_merles.htm FWIW, Seth, my newest addition is a blue bi much like "Riot" provided by Mary Hawley.  She has some lovely blue bis and bred Seth’s dam. With the post on the merle pit bull, it got me to thinking about all the different colors & combos dogs come in. The definitions of different colors confused me a lot at first too, like the brindle/merle mixup, and still do with some, enough that I’d like to put up a page with as many colors and combos as possible. For example, tan, brown, chocolate, liver, gold, cream…if you’ve never seen one that was identified for you, some folks wouldn’t know there was a difference – they’re all brown. Anyways, if you have a picture of a dog whose color is a good example, please feel free to send it to me as an email attachment, including in the mail body the dog’s color, name, breed and age, and your name if you’d like. Also, if the dog’s color or coat changes a lot during its life, pictures of the various stages would be great. Example – dalmation. Coat and ear samples would also be appreciated. Paul C Purebred…mix…their tails still wag the same and they’ll still grab your lunch. Scratch an ear anyways.
