How Do I Find a Dog Show?

Question:

I have checked the web pages of the various kennel clubs in the Washington DC Metro area, specifically in Northern Virginia and I can not find a dog show. I wanted to go and observe for fun but also to gain more knowledge on various dogs that I enjoy and will consider purchasing when the time is right. An all breed show will be great but, I suppose I could go to a specialized breed show if they exist. I’m not really looking for trials as the dogs that usually participate in them would be too large for me. I would think it is warm enough outside that these shows would be going on, but I can not find any info. Anyone out there have any suggestions

When I go to the shows, what should I look for? While I am just "looking" now, I am forming opinions on breeds that I may like to own when the time is right. Usually smaller dogs like the Dachsie, Skye, Bischons ect but under the right circumstances, a smaller spaniel would do fine. I do not mind a mid level amount of exercise i.e. a walk in the morning and a longer one in the evening and for a more active dog, a retrieving session on the weekends. I do not mind moderate grooming but nothing like a Puli or Kommondor….but the Bischons could be a bit much. I believe that the AKC has a section titled "upcoming events" or something like that, which would be the best place to look. In an area as populated as Washington DC, I would expect that there would be some local clubs (state or city) that would have dog shows, but often they only have them once or twice a year. The AKC would be the best place to start, I think. You may want to e-mail them and ask them if you can’t find any info on their website. Don’t rule out indoor shows either, as they can give you some idea of what you like, even though IMO, they are not the best atmsophere (stuffy, bad lighting, too many people in a small space, etc), but they can be a good place to start. Again, if you can’t find anything, contact your local dog clubs (also check local rescues as they may have info), or even look up a breeder in the phone book and give them a call to ask them for info. If you have an idea what kind of dog you would like (even one as general as "small breed", "long hair" or just "good family dog") you could search the dog breed web pages for general information, look at the AKC info (breed standards) for those breeds or contact local breeders (the good ones should be able to give oyu info about the breed, or direct you to someone who can). I’m glad to hear that you are doing some early research, and don’t forget that even if you are sure about one breed, you may go to a dog show and fall in love with another…try to keep your options open if you can, even if your heart doesn’t seem to be. When the time is right, you will find the right dog for you, even if it’s not the exact breed that you thought it would be. Good luck with your search, Melissa PS: Sorry, the AKC section is under Dogs in Competition, and I would suggest going to the Calender of events section rather than searching for your event…Good luck! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have checked the web pages of the various kennel clubs in the > Washington DC Metro area, specifically in Northern Virginia and I can > not find a dog show. Thanks, My interest in breeds is vast. While if I lived in a house with a fenced yard I’d love to have a Golden, lab, Irish/English/Gorden Setter, Pointer, Black and Tan, beagle, (lots of hair to groom would be so realaxing…..I think after I took some classes). But since I live in an apt. I have a LH Dachshund who is getting old (please do not think I am morbid by "looking" at other dogs before I can have one, I’m the type that will want another dog to love soon after the death of a previous one, but not replace it. Although I know that finding one soon isn’t always possible) So, for the foreseeable future, smaller dogs like the Dachsie, Skye, Bicshon and even a cocker. But there are allot out there that look cute, but may not be right for my lifestyle. Gah!  That just happened to me this weekend.  I went to my first dog show, specifically to check out the pugs.  After the competition,  I made the mistake of taking one last stroll around,  and got caught by a group of french bulldogs.  I still like pugs,  but those frenchies really caught my eye… Figures that I’d decide I liked a breed that turns out to be fairly rare, and a bit pricey to boot.  Just my luck <G>. –RD

This is a very large show where you are likly to see representatives of all breeds – HOWEVER – it is outdoors and a mess of red clay if it is raining! (I hate carrying dogs to the ring!) Melissa Who will be showing an American Water Spaniel, Ibizan hound and Cocker there, rain or shine

You could do what I did – adopt a mutant chihuahua mix with humongous ears from a rescue, then pretend she’s part French Bulldog.  :-) —   "Poodles are space aliens who think they’ve disguised    themselves as dogs."  - Paghat the Ratgirl http://www.drizzle.com/~das
