Sandals Royal Bahamian
Question:
Anybody have any recent reviews of Sandals Royal Bahamian? Thinking of going there and would like to know what people thought of the accommodations, food, atmosphere, activities, etc. Thanks, Pam

I have been the SRB this past May. Although the water was very pretty, we didn’t care much for the island itself. The resort was very elegant and but we didn’t think it worth all the hype it was getting. Of course, we are use to more smaller, intimate Sandals and just didn’t like the bigness of the resort. There never was enough lounge chairs and umbrellas (can you say burn), which were crammed together (wall to wall chairs). We had a hard time finding anyone who could make a decent drink (save Garvin!). The food was very good but we couldn’t believe they were serving canned pineapple. You’d think they could get some of there produce from the other islands like Cuba or Jamaica. In general, though, the food was very good, especially at Bacarat’s (yummy breakfast). We preferred Cassanova’s lunch and breakfast buffet’s to the other restuarant near the original main pool. The Crystal room was very formal but excellent. On the other hand the rooms in the new Windsor wing were very nice, despite a mixup with the refrigerator while there. (They left it open and didn’t charge us and then a day or two before we were to leave decided they were going to charge us and locked it up. However, the assist. mgr. made it right). We found the staff to be very helpful but reserved. The room we had was right on the end, 5th floor and in the middle of the Windsor wing. The balcony was kind of small but the room good sized. The decor was your typical caribbean. Activities were typical Sandals but less so (one reason, couldn’t get anyone out of their lounge chairs). We didn’t try any of the water sports so I can’t tell you how they were. We were somewhat disappointed they never turned on their misting pool and half the jucuzzis were not up to par. The island juccuzzi always had sand in it but it was very quiet there (except when Club Med people came in on the other side of the island). You can find several reveiws on the resort at: http://caribtravelnews.com/ http://www.where2stay.com/islands/index.html

and this one is very impressive. It is large for Sandals, the beach is small but very nice (the bech on theoff shore island is much nicer and hardly anyone goes out there), the two main pools are very impressive and where most people seemed to hang, food and service were great and the rooms in the newer Windsor Block are much nicer then the Manor Block. The staff there was very nice – not overly friendly and out going like you would find at a Sandals in Jamaica but pleasant. The concierge staff was incredible – catered to our every whim. There was very good evening entertainment each night in the courtyard and the disco was live and kicking each night. REally a great all around resort. Penney Before you buy.

Am considering the Sandals Royal Bahamian for a vacation next Feb. Any comments from those that have been there will be appreciated. Please email me direct. We have been to a number of Sandals resorts (6 and counting), but never to that specific property. After a few years of Sandals travel, we suggested Sandals to my parents – both in their 70’s and the single most PICKY travellers you’d ever meet. They went to Sandals Royal Bahamian in April 97 and had "absolutely a lovely time". They couldnt say enough about the property, service, staff, food etc. and thankfully truly enjoyed their holiday – you know how difficult it is to suggest a resort to a friend, let alone a parent ! – Thankfully Sandals came through ! There has been much expansion to the property since their trip, and from all accounts it’s going to be the jewel in the Sandals Chain crown. The ONLY comment that they made that might have been construed as a bit negative was on the beach – the tides were strong, the waves were too and the areas of beach that Sandals provided were’nt too large. If you’ve ever been to cable beach, however, you’ll know that there IS plenty of room and pleanty of beach. Have a great trip !!! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Am considering the Sandals Royal Bahamian for a vacation next Feb. Any > comments from those that have been there will be appreciated. We totally enjoyed Sandals Royal Bahamian. The restaurants were great! We spent most of our days on the private island. There is a pool, hottub, restrooms, poolbar, and restaurant on the island. the sand was so soft and deep that my legs hurt from walking on it! The main pool is HUGE. I kinda felt as if the serivce at the pool bar was a little slow due to the number of people that were in the pool. But other than that! I would definately go again….and hope to soon. I have been trying to find feedback in some newsgroup about the Sandals resort in the Bahamas with little luck. My fiance and I are getting married next October, and were thinking of going there. I would like some feedback about personal thoughts on the resort, Sandals, the Bahamas, and the weather in early October. I know it is during the rainy season, but not sure how rainy it is that time of year. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

While I cannot comment on the Royal Bahamian, I can comment on the Sandals company. My wife and I just got married this past October. Three days before our departure date, which was one day before our wedding day, we were informed by our travel agent (who herself had been informed that day) that Sandals was bumping us from our resorts (Halcyon in St. Lucia) because Sandals Antigua was damaged by Georges and they moved everyone from the Antigua resort to the St. Lucian resorts. We reserved in March, paid in full in August, and we were bumped. St. Lucia was not touched by the hurricane. Air Jamaica Vacations gave my wife and I the option of going to the Royal Bahamian or to the Jalousie Hilton on St. Lucia. We chose the Jalousie. Sandals has not once apologized to my wife and I. While I am mad at AJV for reasons I will not go into, they, at least, went to bat for us while we were staying at the Jalousie (the Jalousie plan is not as all-inclusive as Sandals) and they are offering to give us another week at our original resort. I won’t go into the complete details, but my wife and I did not automatically decide on going to the Jalousie, until we could talk with our travel agent and not be rushed. We seriously thought of going to Halcyon anyway and forcing the issue, but I’m glad we didn’t. We didn’t even know if we would be going to St. Lucia until Sunday afternoon (the day after our wedding). Because of being in limbo like we were, we could not thoroughly enjoy our reception, like we had hoped. I posted a long article on rec.travel.caribbean back in October, about the experience my wife and I went through. You should try dejanews and search for "Warning about Sandals and Air Jamaica Vacations". I suggest reading this, what I wrote above will make more sense, in my attempt to condense it, I left out many important details. One last thought, hurricane season and Sandals do not go together, despite their hurricane guarantee. Sandals has done nothing for my wife and I. They have lost quite a few customers (ie. my wife and I met about 12 other couples who were bumped). Paul Probus

hi, i’ve been twice in the bahamas, in septembere this year and october 92. weather was great but rather hot and humid. we had some rainy hours, but they lasted not very long (some minutes until 2-3 hours); after that sun came right up again. i havent been to the sandals, but heard it’s a hell of expensive, even in the low season. my choice though is going even more futher south, to the family islands, exumas or cat island. great beaches (great really great…) fantastic waterquality, good diving; it’s really worth a trip down there. nassau is too overcrowded, has occasionally a bad reputation (bad service, unfriendly people); a very nice place might be the atlantis resort (right on the cabbage beach); ok have a nice trip and enjoy it. greetings andy Josie Failla schrieb: – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I have been trying to find feedback in some newsgroup about the Sandals > resort in the Bahamas with little luck. The December edition of Caribbean Travel Roundup mentioned by the other poster has my trip report. We were just married at SRB this past October. Weather was beautiful. A bit of rain our last day, but it passed. Water still pretty warm too. If you can’t find my report, email me and I’ll send it to you. Lisa

Due to unforseen occurences I’ve been bumped to this resort. Is it really everything Sandals claims it is ? Actually if it’s even half as nice as they claim I’ll probably be happy.

It’s lovely, the food and service are excellent. Beach just ok, but the offshore island more than makes up for it. Where were you bumped from and why? Sandals RB has their own island about 1/2 mile from shore. A boat takes guests over and back every hour for most of the day. Nice restaurant, another swim up bar, and better beach over there. Cafe Goombay is tough to get in, you need to call the second you check in. Tons of local conch dishes and wonderful outdoor ambiance. On very windy days or in any inclement weather, they close the island. Some people get married over there. I loved it, fewer people, more natural beach setting with trees, and calm waters. I could have spent my entire trip over there! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->It’s lovely, the food and service are excellent. Has anyone been to the Sandals Royal Bahamian? My wife and I are thinking of making the trip in late September/early October, from northern California. A major concern is this is the hurricane season. Any comments on Sandals Royal Bahamian? Please email, thanks. Tom Caruthers

Since living and traveling in the Caribbean, I find Sept. and Oct. the worst times for potential storm. I survived Hugo and Gilbert. Annie > Any comments on Sandals Royal Bahamian? >Please email, thanks. >Tom Caruthers
