By breed? Height? Weight? Living? Dead? You need to supply a little more info with your question. LizK
Response:
By breed the largest is the English Mastiff and the tallest is the Irish Wolfhound… According to the Guinness Book of Records the record holder for the world’s largest dog is Zorba, a Mastiff, at 343 pounds. He stood 37 inches at the shoulder and was 8 foot 3 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Zorba set this record in November, 1989, when he was 8 years old…The previous line was taken from the Mastiff Faq and I did not personally see this dog…Anyway that’s all folks…GG – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->does anyone have info on largest dog in the world? i would greatly >appreciate it >thanks > By breed? According to a note on my dog names list, a Mastiff named Murphy was the largest dog in the world in 1998, while an Old English Mastiff named Zorba holds the title for all-time largest dog. I think that info came from Guinness, but I didn’t make a note of it. Doug — "He picked a fight with a D[o]ug. "largest dog in the world" was the question… not largest in AKC. Isn’t the largest breed the Tosa Inu? – Marsha
Response:
The largest breed, by weight, is the Mastiff. Jenifer
Response:
The Tosa Inu IS a mastiff. And I *think* it’s larger than the AKC Mastiff. – Marsha

Wolfhounds are the "tallest". While a Dane might measure as tall at the shoulder, Wolfhounds are much longer backed, so when standing on their rear legs (front paws on your shoulders), they are the tallest. Please understand that "size" is not the be all and end all feature of these breeds, and should not be valued above proper structure. A very tall wolfhound might be tall because his shoulders are very straight, lacking angulation. When these dogs run, their front ends really take a pounding– lots of weight and no angulation to absorb the shock. This makes for problems of excessive stress to the joints. A sound dog of 34 inches would be much preferred over some of the rangey 37 inchers you see. All things being equal, of course larger is preferred– but they are rarely equal. They have to be able to function as galloping hounds. — Toni www.irish-wolfhounds.com e-mail Toni [at] irish-wolfhounds [dot] com

Zorba was listed at 345 lb., but I have not been able to access his website for over a year. — Toni www.irish-wolfhounds.com e-mail Toni [at] irish-wolfhounds [dot] com
