Clintons the former cat lovers
Question:
I agree. A pet is for life. This is why I keep hiding Xena, and if it comes to the worst, we will move…together.

I guess you are addressing The Cat Protector, re: being pleased that the dog got marching orders? I can’t see where getting rid of either of the pets would be a pleasing thing; it’s sad, no matter the species. Being a "cat" person isn’t inherently better than being a "dog" person, IMO; it’s just a matter of personal preference. If this story were being told here, but with opposite results, I bet people’d say that they should’ve found an apt. that would accept 2 pets & moved in order to not have had to get rid of the cat. Or that they should’ve offered the landlord/management more of a collateral fee, etc.in hopes of keeping the cat & dog. IOW, seems odd to me that the dog getting marching orders is considered fine (& apparently a good thing, as long as the cat still had his/her home), but if it were the other way around… And, also, from the story, one can’t discern who’d been the first pet, the cat or the dog. Yeah well I was just reading an old article apparently from USA today that says the Bush’s cat Ernie which was rescued from a tree when he was still Governer apparently went to the home of a family friend because it was not declawed while India went on to the White House because he was declawed. This proves that even our President would dump a cat and declaw another. I hope we can find one first family that has nothing but cats and keeps them with their claws. — Cat Galaxy- The Internet radio station for cats. Cathy, I totally agree! Both cat and dog people are great. I believe that people who live with pets and properly care for them are inherently better people. :) I get tired of reading "cat people vs. dog people" on this newsgroup. Obviously we all love cats, but there’s no need to put down dogs. Truthfully, though, I believe it’s a dog biased world. I don’t really care what popular preference is, I just love my kitties…. There are several dogs in my life that I love as well. Dogs are just too much work, IMO, and I don’t foresee ever getting one. I definitely enjoy them, but they’re not for me. Aurora wouldn’t stand for it anyway. I was housesitting for my friend Michael back in October. He’s got 2 big dogs. Gustav used to go over with me often (several times a week) to spend time with them and Gustav is actually very fond of the dogs. He plays with them… Aurora just is NOT as accepting. We were there nearly 3 weeks and she simply could not contain herself in a room with them. She hissed at them like mad and never let up regardless of how much time we spend there.. I feel sad, too for the dog who got walking papers. :( It’s horrible. ~Kaare – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I have a similar story, but..opposite! I’ve never heard anything along that line, but have wondered that too – if she (Chelsea) & Betty Currie agreed that Chelsea’d be free to take Socks back once she was done w/ school & settled in her own place. Cathy — "Staccato signals of constant information…" ("The Boy in the Bubble") Paul Simon

It’s still an old story, dating from the end of Clinton’s second term, when Socks went to live w/ Betty Currie, & it was discussed a lot (incl. on this ng) back then. It’s only being revived in the media today, because of Buddy’s death. Yes, you’re right, Socks was Chelsea’s cat. I don’t remember hearing anything about allergies (although maybe there were), but only that Socks & Buddy didn’t get along well, at all, even after time had passed. The main thing people seemed to think here (this ng) was that since Socks was the resident pet before Buddy showed up, was that if anything, it should’ve been Buddy who was rehomed. Otoh, as you alluded to – who knows what input Chelsea had in the decision (besides taking the UK college bit into acct.), or if maybe Betty Currie was happy to take on Socks whereas they didn’t have a ready-to-adopt-him person for Buddy, etc. Btw – I agree, re: Ms. Currie adopting Socks; she already knew him, & it seemed like a good solution in light of the situation, to me. IIRC, Socks was Chelsea’s cat, and both her parents are/were allergic to cats–it seems that, being a student, she probably couldn’t bring him with her to school (esp. since she’s been in the UK, what with the quarantine laws), and they probably decided that better a dog that didn’t make them sneeze than a cat that did. I have a real problem when people dump animals too, although thank god for Betty Currie (wasn’t that her name?) who took Socks. I was very sorry to hear about Buddy’s death. Do you remember when the Bushes moved into the Whitehouse they dumped a cat too? I can’t remember the cat’s name, but they sent it to a friend in California, and the cat escaped. A janitor found the cat wandering the streets, recognized him from the press (President’s cat missing, like it was a funny story) and turned him in. I just don’t understand dumping an animal at all, but I think most of us here take our pet ownership quite seriously…and accept the responsibility. I’m sorry not everyone feels the same.
Juls p.s. I know there are sometimes extraordinary circumstances that force a situation; I’m talking about people who discard pets like old purses. It hurts me.

I heard it on the radio as I was waking up this a.m. I wonder how he got out…the story I heard wasn’t clear as to whether he had escaped the yard or if he was being walked at the time of his death but I felt sad about it all day.

There was a long thread (maybe threads?) here about Socks going to live w/ Betty Curie back when the decision was made, when B. Clinton left office. A Google search should bring it all up. Cathy — "Staccato signals of constant information…" ("The Boy in the Bubble") Paul Simon

This proves that even our President would dump a cat and declaw another. I also read (this is unsubstanciated, but worth looking into to see if it is true) that Chelsea gave Socks to a friend to keep while she was in college, but she wanted socks back when she was done with school. — http://www.stacyinthecity.com http://www.frogduck.com

Well their cat India which apparently has been with the Bush’s for 10 years moved to the White House with their two dogs. Let’s just hope they move out with the Bush’s unlike Socks who was pretty much dumped. — Cat Galaxy- The Internet radio station for cats. << I was very sorry to hear about Buddy’s death. >> Me, too. I heard it on the radio as I was waking up this a.m. I wonder how he got out…the story I heard wasn’t clear as to whether he had escaped the yard or if he was being walked at the time of his death but I felt sad about it all day. I already went through feeling sad about Socks a few months ago. I believe Ernie was the name of Bush’s relinquished cat. Hey did anyone read the article on Yahoo about the Clintons’ dog being killed after a car hit it? I was apalled to read that when the Clinton’s decided they could only take one animal with them when they left the White House, they took the dog and not the cat. Socks apparently went to live with Bill Clinton’s secretary in Virginia. Apparently there was plenty of room on the plane to New York for Socks too. I hate it when people just decide to just dump a cat in favor of another animal or situation. I can only hope Socks went to a better home. My respect for the Clintons’ just went way down after reading this article. — Cat Galaxy- The Internet radio station for cats.

There was a long thread (maybe threads?) here about Socks going to live w/ Betty Curie back when the decision was made, when B. Clinton left office. A Google search should bring it all up. Cathy — "Staccato signals of constant information…" ("The Boy in the Bubble") Paul Simon
