Shih Tzu Allergies and Smell – HELP
Question:
Probably something fungal. Its a vicious circle. The dog has a fungal infection so licks/chews at his paws, this makes the paws warms and moist, thus a perfect breeding ground for fungus, and so on. Try putting some Gold Bond powder on his feet. It fights fungus and also tastes yucky (but is non toxic) so it’ll discourage licking. — Susan Shih Tzu Delites http://www.angelfire.com/ga/shihtzudelites/ Topknots & Tails Petgrooming "Dogs aren’t our whole life, they make our lives whole"…Roger Caras
Response:
Our 8 year-old Shih Tzu has the usual ear problems and resulting bad smell, etc. We learned to control this by keeping the ears clean, using germicidal solutions available at Petsmart, and pulling out the long hairs in the ears periodically. This has eliminated most of the smell from the ears and any ear itching on the carpet, etc. However, our dog has always licked his paws, and the vets we have talked to have basically said there is no known cure, but suggested giving him a teaspoon of Benadryl syrup once a day. That has no effect, and he continues to lick, which seems to produce a very powerful "salty dog" smell that is very offensive. We have eliminated all dairy and food other than organic dog food from his diet, but the problem continues. If the dog sleeps in our bedroom at night the room almost has to be fumigated in the morning. I wonder if anyone has had the same problem, particulary with the smell part, and if you found a solution. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Has the licking possibly caused some sort of infection? Maybe he’s licking for a reason that needs to be looked into more carefully. I admit I don’t know a thing about Shih Tzu, but I think usually when a dog is licking at some part of their body, it’s hurting them or bothering them in some way. Have you tried behavior modification — like rewarding the dog for not licking, or giving him something better to do? — Lori in Peoria http://www.geocities.com/reynoldsfamily_2000/
