Silky Terrier
Question:
There’s going to be some shows the first Fri Sat Sun in Feb at the Atlanta Expo Center South (Jonesboro Rd right off I-285). Why not come to the show and meet some silkies and breeders in person? These are usually large shows, so there should be a good entry. — Susan Shih Tzu Delites http://www.angelfire.com/ga/shihtzudelites/ Topknots & Tails Petgrooming "Dogs aren’t our whole life, they make our lives whole"…Roger Caras

My wife and I have decided on adding a new member to our family. We would like to find a silky terrier. I live in the Atlanta area, and would be willing to travel to get one. I have looked in the AKA for a reputable breeder in the southeast, but have had a hard time. If anyone has any insight, please let me know. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks is advance, Jay

I’ve owned 2. they are truly more terrier in personality than they are toy. There can be quite a bit of epilepsy in the breed so be wary of that, and as with many toy dogs collapsing tracheas can be a problem too. Their coat requires a great deal of care. Mainly frequent brushing (as in almost daily) and trimming of the hair on the feet. They have become popular with many mills it seems in recent years so please do your research before buying. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Just wondering what people think of this breed… > Looking for a pet

I just got a silky terrier this fall to show. She is delightful – full of fun and a real sparkle in her eye. She is so smart, she will invent games for herself…like throwing her own toy across the living room so she can chase it. They don’t shed and they are very easy to groom (my other dogs are toy poodles so you can understand why I appreciate the ease of grooming aspect). They do vary a bit in temperament – some are more terrier in their personality – like my girl. Her littermate was a very affectionate, hold me kind of dog. I chose mine because I knew she would have to have a pretty bold personality to stand up to the show dog game. I would go to dog shows and watch the silky terrier classes. It is a good opportunity to watch and learn. Go to several shows before you decide on a breeder. LISTEN to what is being said – there are some real poor sportsmen out there and you really don’t want to be associated with them. Also, if you’re not hung up on getting a puppy, a lot of breeders have fairly young dogs (3 – 7y.o.) they want to retire from their breeding program that make wonderful pets. The toy breeds generally live into their teens so they have a lot of years left to offer you. They are also usually house broke and don’t chew up everything in sight.
