Speaking of pet shops…..

Good work! Fortunately our government (in the Netherlands) has made it a lot harder for pet shops to sell pups. All dogs in kennels (the ones your dog can stay when you’re on holiday), pounds, shops, etc. must be tattoed or microchipped and must be registered by the kennel club or a foundation that registers non-pedigree dogs. Furthermore there are laws for the conditions in which dogs (and cats) are housed in such companies and the owner of the kennel, shop, etc. must have passed several exams before he may sell or keep dogs. I haven’t seen any cats and dogs for sale in pet shops for a couple of years. Guess it’s easier to sell exotic animals, birds, rabbits, fish, etc. I think that security just wanted to know what the meeting in front of the pet shop was all about. Could have been some organised protest. Finding a good pet is not easy and pups are just so adorable… Keep up the good work! Grtz, Jigal

Way to go, Virginia.  Good job!   I guess I am lucky enough to be living someplace where I haven’t come across a single store that sells puppies or kittens.  Heck, there is even a small store nearby that is run by someone who does bull terrier rescue!  Needless to say, I get my supplies from them whenever I can. You should be able to find out the person’s contact info at the state offices. I believe all states have the position but it varies as to the role that person plays. Nancy

Virginia, it’s people like you who make—or try to make this world better. I almost bought a puppy from a pet shop two years ago, when I was searching for the perfect dog. The three that I had looked at were minpins and a jack russel, all of which were fairly skinny and probably around five months old, if not older. In fact, the jack russel was very, very aggressive towards people and dogs, but I guess being in a cramped cage with other dogs isn’t the best, especially when it’s filthy. That, however, was not what turned me down about that situation. It was the price! $1000 for a miniature pincher was ridiculous! The second place I went to look at a dog was a breeder who put an ad in the local newspaper. Might I add that after this horrible incident, I did my research on pet shops and puppy mills. So anyways, we went to this lady’s house, or should I say trailer (aka puppy mill)? And we went inside. There were small crates everywhere with dogs in them, and even a few birds, which had literally destroyed the place. Bird seed and poop was all over the floor, and one can only imagine the smell. We asked to see the parents of a little min pin and a bichonfrise, both times getting the reply of, "Oh, the mother’s in the kennel, and the dad’s at the vet getting his ears fixed." Let me tell you that at the time, I was inclined to believe her, but now I don’t. The min pin was very small, perhaps guinea pig sized if not smaller than that; it had no energy whatsoever. While we were there, this lady called the Atlanta Journal to raise the price of her bichons (I don’t think she spoke to anyone), and afterwards, she convinced us to get one of them instead of the min pin. So, not really knowing what to do, we bought this $550 dog, only to find out the next day upon giving it a bath that it was covered in fleas. Two of us at this lady’s place swore we had been bitten by something, but she kept reassuring us that she didn’t have any fleas in there. Anyways, after finding out about the fleas, we took the dog back, and surprisingly enough, got a refund. I personally think the poor thing had worms because of its size, but of course, -she- said it didn’t. A few days after that, there was another ad in the paper. The man was a backyard breeder but obviously knew what he was doing. He had the mother, father, and pups in one large fenced in area that was clean, and a rat terrier and min pin in another. These puppies were obviously a lot healthier than any of the previous ones we saw, because they were playful and energetic. In fact, we bought two dogs at different times from this same man, one which is mine and the most lovable and cute thing one could ever find. :) The other one was shy when we first picked it up for my stepsister, but when we got him home, he was going off the walls, biting everything he could get his teeth around! I swear, that dog had some brain defect or something! LOL. Every time you’d go to pet him, he’d snap at your hand and the like. Ok, so I only posted this to share my story, not to ramble on about the personalities of two puppies. So I’ll shut up now. -Alyssa

Thanks Pamela! Just go to Google.com and search on puppy mills. You will find all kinds of photos. The ones I used I had permission to reprint(not difficult to get when I tell them why I want them). Way to go Virginia!!!  You’re a person after my own heart, exactly what I do when the opportunity arises.  Many’s the time I’ve been chased away from pet stores here in Oz for doing just what you did, unfortunately I didn’t have any photos to show.  You’ve given me an idea.  Keep up the good work. I think you did a very good thing.  It bothers me that they can sic security on you for providing people with important factual information. There is only one pet store in Valdosta, Georgia.  It has over a dozen puppies kept in very small cages.  The employees told me that they only take the puppies out long enough to clean their cages once a day, and that is the only contact they get.  They look very unhappy.  I heard an employee recommend a Husky to a customer who was looking for an outside dog.  For those of you who don’t know Valdosta, it borders Florida.  Last week the radio weather report said the high was 105 degrees. The owner purports to have the interest of the animals at heart.  While he was implying this, I noticed that one of the kittens he was selling for $10 each had an obviously swollen eye that was leaking puss.  He waved away my concern, and I wondered what he would do with that sick kitten after I left. Does anyone know a good formula for addressing such an inhumane pet shop? Jeff jeff#doplay.com
