Dog appropriate for apartment.
Question:
Try a Bichon Frise – must be kept groomed but can be paper trained and is small 10-18 pounds – is not a yippy dog loving and outgoing if socialized properly – crate train as a puppy. Companion dog does not do well being left alone for long periods of time
Response:
You might think about a Shih Tzu. I have owned two and they are not "yippey" at all. Actually, many people like them for this characteristic. It’s just one of the pluses, a small, cute, happy, friendly dog that doesn’t run after your heels and nip and yip! They are nice dogs to have, on the Cyber-Pet Finder, they describe them as big dogs in little dogs bodies. I have to agree with them. They are tough little guys! Regardless of how "fru-fru" they look! Good luck with whatever you choose!

I want to thank everyone for their input. My SO and I are looking pretty seriously at the Dachsunds and are waiting to be e-mailed by our local rescue group (someone was referring us). How about a Staffy Bull? Staffordshire Bull Terriers (NOT American Staffordshire Terriers) are about 30 lbs. and would make a great apartment dog, I think. Kind of like a big dog in a small dog’s body, so you might like that idea since you said you really prefer large dogs. They’re not yippy at all, and are very sturdy, well-built little guys. Should get along fine with the cat too, if raised with it. Just make sure to socialize it with other dogs from the time it is a puppy, as they can be intolerant of other dogs if not socialized early on. Good luck with whatever choice you make! How reluctantly is s/he "allowing" you to get a dog? Watch out for this situation. I suspect the first chewed slipper, "accident", middle-of-the-night wake-up call, etc will not be well-received. I also suspect you will get NO, NONE, NADA support in doggy issues. >a Dachsund but everyone tells me this is a bad choice because they are >horrible diggers. Is this true? Do you have a fenced yard? How much time do you want to spend grooming? walking? vacuuming? What are your leisure-time activities? What dog-related activities, if any, appeal to you? Sandra Pover Reply To field intentionally incorrect to avoid spam Remove NOSPAM to email

Well, I’ve had several dog breeds over my life span and purchased different breed for my need at those various times. The best little dog I had was a Border Terrior. (They look somewhat like Benji. Anyway she was great with kids, my children did dress her up and walk her in their carriage when she and they were young. She was small but thought she was an Irishwolf Hound. She was stable and not yippy in the house. House trained very easily. She had no desire to roam the neighborhood. She was a faithful companion and lived to a ripe old age. Her name was Angel which she always was and now is. :-) I’ve had goldens, newfoundlands, english setters, a few mutts. I now have a rottweiller who is my constant companion and friend. Angel in her old age and Rusty, as a youngster (rottie) got along famously. :-) Good luck in your hunting. – Noel

Go with the min pin if you like them…although great care must be taken to train them not to bark excessively. I also recommend a Schip on those same conditions(Sugar was an ex apartment dog and was not a problem…well scaring the daylights out of the neighbor when she chased the cat downstairs and it sounded like a heard of elephants.) I don’t have experience with dachsies but I imagine, like other breeds as long as it receives proper attention and training it could work for you.
