ALLERGIC TO DOGS

Question:

I became allergic to dogs in the past couple of years but it doesn’t give me asthma, just irritates my eyes, nose, throat and skin. I’ve heard that the different types of fur will effect people in different ways. I’ve only come into direct contact with dogs with ‘hair’, not ’soft fur’. So I may not be allergic to these, I’ve yet to build up the courage to find out. I’ve also heard that people can build up a resistance, if they come into contact for a very short time, regularly. Although, if your mother gets bad asthma attacts, I wouldn’t advise that. It may be worth you looking into because they really are worth their weight in gold. Good luck. I don’t know about hypo-allergenic (makes me think of earrings :) , but some breeds of dog such as the poodle have hair that doesn’t shed, it just keeps growing.  This apparently means there’s much less dander, which is what people are allergic to, not the dogs themselves.  Someone else might be able to tell you what breeds are like this. Hi, I’m also allergic to dogs, and I have a poodle who’s causing no problem. In the past I had a yorkie with no problems either.  I’ve heard that schnauzers are also hypo-allergenic. ***** Mel

Hi!  It really depends on whether or not your mother is allergic to dog hair or dog dandruff.  There are breeds that shed very little.  The Poodle, the Maltese, the Kerry Blue Terrier, the Portuguese Water dog, the Irish Water Spaniel, and the Yorkshire terrier are examples of breeds that shed almost nothing. When these breeds do shed, the hair usually catches in their thick coats. Therefore, they must be brushed often to remove the hair. I have a Maltese/Poodle, and I have never seen any of her hair on the furniture, or anywhere in the house, but dead hair comes out of her coat when I brush her. Many people who are allergic to dog hair have no rection to these dogs.  All dogs shed dander, but the low-shedders shed very little of this also.  Very few people get allergic reactions to the breeds listed above, but the odd person does.  Before you invest in a low shed dog, make sure your mother spends some time around one. Good luck! Jessie Z.  :)

I am allergic to many breed of dogs myself. But I do have Chihuahuas, and I find that I am not allergic to them. Even if the get cloes to my face, I can deal with it.   Not all breeds are like that, if possible, have your mother find someone who has the breed of dog you would like to have. Them have you mother visit with the dog. Please ask the owner of the dog to bathe in beforehand, as that will make it easier if you mother does have an allergy attack.  Try this with several breeds. When you do find a breed that she can be close to without much symptoms, then consider again if you really want to get a dog. Then the next step is finding a good breeder. Please do not go to the pet store to get your new puppy, if you don’t care about the age or sex, try the aniaml shelter or breed rescue first.   If you have any more questions, please feel free to e-mail me.
