Bald Yorkshire Terrier Babies

Maybe? <cough> You probably need to be talking to the AKC Investigations Department and chatting a little about DNA testing to determine who the parents of your dogs really are. No, it is ailment that causes baldness. Not the state of being bald. Don’t know too much about treatment for dogs tho. Do know that one of my female relatives suffered with this for a long time, but has been treated and is doing much better. MaryBeth

Quote: We need to decide whether to change either of the male or female. Into what? If you mean breeding either one again, with the information you have, I wouldn’t use either one. Nor do another breeding until you have WAY more info than you seemed to have had with these two dogs. Jane Webb Mudpie & Moonpie

I was hoping this was an accidental breeding instead of you owning a pair you intend to keep breeding. If it turns out to be a hereditary defect then you should not breed either of them as odd ball things like this usually mean both carry some recessive. As they are mother and son according to the former owners then you KNOW they are extremely likely to be carrying the defect (if it is one) just based on the number of pups that are showing it. The operative words here are spay and neuter not repeat breedings. I sincerely hope there are no liver shunt problems inherent in that line too! My Yorkie hs just dilivered 5 puppies of which 2 were born with bald heads and random bald spots on body. Vet thinks could be Alopecia or inbreeding, which is unknown to me if it is a inbreed problem. I have searched extensively and symptoms suit nothing i have found. Has anyone experienced this type of birth. Please any help much appreciated. Cola
Response:
Well were they born early? sometimes the hair is not quite finished growing when a litter is born earlier than normal. With such a large litter in a toy breed that is certainly possible. I would watch them as they grow (presuming they do) and see if the hair grows in and evaluate them when they are a bit more mature for any other medical problems I find supplementing the dam with goats milk a huge help in letting a toy bitch produce tons of good quality milk for her litter.
