Yorkshire Terrier frequent bladder infections
Question:
Looking for help. We have a 6 year old Yorkshire Terrier who for the past 2 years has been suffering from bladder infections. Frequent trips to the vet. revealed that she had stones in her bladder. The stones were removed and the dog was put on a special diet. Distilled water and a special Hill`s Canine U/D diet. It seems that although the stone situation may be controlled the bladder infections keep reoccuring shortly after the antibiotic treatment is ended. Has anyone out there have a solution to my Yorkie`s problem.

Most chronic, recurring cystitis has an underlying cause. Sometimes that can be urinary stasis. Has your vet ever done a contrast study to examine your dog’s bladder and lower and/or upper urinary tract? If not, you might want to ask him about such or find a hospital or university nearby which could do it. It may provide an answer for you. If that’s not helpful, referral to an internal medicine specialist may be in order. Suffered the same malady myself for years– antibiotics repeatedly, etc. FINALLY learned to keep on hand cranberry concentrate capsules and a Juniper berry, uva ursi, cornsilk herbal combo preparation. I start this at the first sign of trouble, and haven’t had it be a problem for years now. Sounds like your dogs’ system is just naturally too acid– the cranberry used on a daily basis will remedy that– just adjust for weight.
